Why am I prompted to download a PowerPoint file?

In some Office 2002 (aka Office XP) installations, Sanction II users may be prompted to "Save" or "Open" files when opening PowerPoint files from the "Other Exhibits" section.
What happens?
When clicking on items listed under "Other Exhibits" in the Sanction II tree view, some users may be prompted in a "File Download" dialog to "Open" or "Save" the item they selected. If you select "Open" the file will open in the Sanction II viewer window but the dialog box can be distracting .

There are a couple of different reasons and fixes...
The main reason this issue occurs is due to updated security policies from Microsoft, in an attempt to help minimize the spread of macro viruses within their Office products. To correct this issue, do the following:
First and foremost, you should make sure all the current patches and service packs have been installed from Microsoft. Installing the service packs for Office XP and 2000, have fixed this issue.

Change the download setting.
After making sure you have all of the latest Office updates, the "File Download" dialog box will still appear when you click on the file the window will look similar to the one seen here. If you click "Open" the file will launch in the Sanction II viewer window. Removing the checkmark from the item below that says "Always Ask Before Opening This Type of File " will modify your Windows Operating System and you will no longer prompted when you attempt to open a file of this type. If the "Always Ask Before Opening This Type of File " option is grayed out, or the File Download Dialog continues to display with the Always Ask Before Opening This Type of File " option is checked, continue reading below.
On some systems your "File Download" dialog box may appear like the one below with the "Always Ask Before Opening This Type of File " selection grayed out and unavailable for change. If this is the case, you will need to change the setting for the .PPT file extension type.

Changing file settings...
While this may seem a bit technical, it is a very easy modification to your Windows settings. First, from within Windows Explorer, select "Tools" -> "Folder Options."

Once the "Folder Options" dialog box opens, click on the "File Types" tab at the top of the dialog box. This tab lists every file type associated with Windows and may take a moment or two to open. Once it does, scroll down until you find PPT as shown below.

Next, click the "Advanced" button to change the setting for PPT files. If the "Advanced" button is grayed out, make sure you are logged on with at least "Power User" privileges or you won't be able to make changes to this setting.

The "Edit File Type" dialog box will now open showing the settings for this file type. If there is a check in the "Confirm open after download" option, remove it. If this option and/or the "Browse in same window" option are grayed out, make sure you install the latest service packs for Office from the Microsoft Website listed above.
